A man serving life in prison for molesting and killing a Crothersville girl is now part of a Department of Correction investigation.

Anthony Stockelman, convicted for the murder of Katie Collman, now has a tattoo that reads “Katie’s Revenge” on his forehead.

A Department of Correction spokesperson says Stockelman did receive the tattoo while serving time at Wabash Valley Correctional Facility. While they won’t comment further they do say the incident is under investigation and they have contacted the state police.

Surgery today

// September 27th, 2006 // No Comments » // Uncategorized

Had a lumpectomy performed today on my breast. The first time since I was a kid that I had general ansthesia. They will biopsy what they took out, but they think everything is okay since the whole darn thing was removed. I haven’t taken a look at the incision yet, but I was told that the surgery went well and I’m feeling fine. Wish me luck though and send good mojo that the biopsy will come back squeaky clean! Whee.

There comes a time in your life when you finally get it… When in the midst of all your fears and insanity you stop dead in your tracks and somewhere the voice inside your head cries out- ENOUGH! Enough fighting and crying or struggling to hold on. And, like a child quieting down after a blind tantrum, your sobs begin to subside, you shudder once or twice, you blink back your tears and through a mantle of wet lashes you begin to look at the world from a new perspective. This is your awakening.

You realize that it is time to stop hoping and waiting for something, or someone, to change or for happiness, safety and security to come galloping over the next horizon. You come to terms with the fact that there aren’t always fairytale endings (or beginnings for that matter) and that any guarantee of “happily ever after ” must begin with you. Then a sense of serenity is born of acceptance.

So you begin making your way through the “reality of today” rather than holding out for the “promise of tomorrow.” You realize that much of who you are, and the way you navigate through life is, in great part, a result of all the social conditioning you’ve received over the course of a lifetime. And you begin to sift through all the nonsense you were taught about:

  • how you should look and how much you should weigh
  • what you should wear and where you should shop
  • where you should live or what type of car you should drive
  • who you should sleep with and how you should behave
  • who you should marry and why you should stay
  • the importance of having children or what you owe your family
  • Slowly you begin to open up to new worlds and different points of view. And you begin reassessing and redefining who you are and what you really believe in. And you begin to discard the doctrines you have outgrown, or should never have practiced to begin with.

You accept the fact that you are not perfect and that not everyone will love, appreciate or approve of who or what you are… and that’s OK… they are entitled to their own views and opinions. And, you come to terms with the fact that you will never be a size 5 or a “perfect 10″ Or a perfect human being for that matter. So you stop trying to compete with the image inside your head or agonizing over how you compare. And you take a long look at yourself in the mirror and you make a promise to give yourself the same unconditional love and support you give so freely to others. Then a sense of confidence is born of self-approval.

And, you stop maneuvering through life merely as a “consumer” hungry for your next fix, a new dress, another pair of shoes or looks of approval and admiration from family, friends or even strangers who pass by. Then you discover that it is truly in giving that we receive and that the joy and abundance you seek grows out of the giving. And you recognize the importance of “creating” & “contributing” rather than “obtaining ” & “accumulating.”

And you give thanks for the simple things you’ve been blessed with; things that millions of people upon the face of the earth can only dream about a full refrigerator, clean running water, a soft warm bed and the freedom to pursue your own dreams.

And then you begin to love and to care for yourself. You stop engaging in self-destructive behaviors including participating in dysfunctional relationships. You begin eating a balanced diet, drinking more water and exercising. And because you’ve learned that fatigue drains the spirit and creates doubt and fear, you give yourself permission to rest. And just as food is fuel for the body, laughter is fuel for the spirit and so you make it a point to create time for play.

Then you learn about love and relationships, how to love, how much to give in love, when to stop giving and when to walk away. And you allow only the hands of a lover who truly loves and respects you to glorify you with his touch. You learn that people don’t always say what they mean or mean what they say, intentionally or unintentionally and that not everyone will always come through and interestingly enough, it’s not always about you. So, you stop lashing out and pointing fingers or looking to place blame for the things that were done to you or weren’t done for you. And you learn to keep your Ego in check and to acknowledge and redirect the destructive emotions it spawns; anger, jealousy and resentment.

You learn how to say I was wrong and to forgive people for their own human frailties. You learn to build bridges instead of walls and about the healing power of love as it is expressed through a kind word, a warm smile or a friendly gesture. And, at the same time, you eliminate any relationships that are hurtful or fail to uplift and edify you. You stop working so hard at smoothing things over and setting your needs aside. You learn that feelings of entitlement are perfectly OK and that it is your right to want or expect certain things. And you learn the importance of communicating your needs with confidence and grace. You learn that the only cross to bear is the one you choose to carry and that eventually martyrs are burned at the stake. Then you learn to distinguish between guilt, and responsibility and the importance of setting boundaries and learning to say NO. You learn that you don’t know all the answers, it’s not your job to save the world and that sometimes you just need to Let Go.

Moreover, you learn to look at people as they really are and not as you would want them to be, and you are careful not to project your neediness or insecurities onto a relationship. You learn that you will not be, more beautiful, more intelligent, more lovable or important because of the man on your arm or the child that bears your name. You learn that just as people grow and change, so it is with love and relationships and that that not everyone can always love you the way you would want them to. So you stop appraising your worth by the measure of love you are given. And suddenly you realize that it’s wrong to demand that someone live their life or sacrifice their dreams just to serve your needs, ease your insecurities, or meet “your ” standards and expectations. You learn that the only love worth giving and receiving is the love that is given freely without conditions or limitations. And you learn what it means to love. So you stop trying to control people, situations and outcomes. You learn that “alone” does not mean “lonely” and you begin to discover the joy of spending time “with yourself” and “on yourself.” Then you discover the greatest and most fulfilling love you will ever know. Self Love. And so, it comes to pass that through understanding your heart heals; and now all new things are possible.

Moving along, you begin to avoid Toxic people and conversations. And you stop wasting time and energy rehashing your situation with family and friends. You learn that talk doesn’t change things and that unrequited wishes can only serve to keep you trapped in the past. So, you stop lamenting over what could or should have been and you make a decision to leave the past behind. Then you begin to invest your time and energy to affect positive change. You take a personal inventory of all your strengths and weaknesses and the areas you need to improve in order to move ahead. You set your goals and map out a plan of action to see things through.

You learn that life isn’t always fair and you don’t always get what you think you deserve and you stop personalizing every loss or disappointment. You learn to accept that sometimes bad things happen to good people and that these things are not an act of God… but merely a random act of fate.

And you stop looking for guarantees because you’ve learned that the only thing you can really count on is the unexpected and that whatever happens, you’ll learn to deal with it. And you learn that the only thing you must truly fear is the great robber baron of all time FEAR itself. So you learn to step right into and through your fears because to give into fear is to give away the right to live life on your terms. You learn that much of life truly is a self-fulfilling prophesy and you learn to go after what you want and not to squander your life living under a cloud of indecision or feelings of impending doom.

Then, YOU LEARN ABOUT MONEY… the personal power and independence it brings and the options it creates. And you recognize the necessity to create your own personal wealth. Slowly, you begin to take responsibility for yourself by yourself and you make yourself a promise to never betray yourself and to never ever settle for less than your heart’s desire. Then a sense of power is born of self-reliance. And you live with honor and integrity because you know that these principles are not the outdated ideals of a by-gone era but the mortar that holds together the foundation upon which you must build your life. And you make it a point to keep smiling, to keep trusting and to stay open to every wonderful opportunity and exciting possibility. Then you hang a wind chime outside your window to remind yourself what beauty there is in Simplicity.

Finally, with courage in your heart and with God by your side you take a stand, you FAKE a deep breath and you begin to design the life you want to live as best as you can

A word about the Power of Prayer: In some of my darkest, most painful and frightening hours, I have prayed not for the answers to my prayers or for material things but for my “God” to help me find the strength, confidence and courage to persevere; to face each day and to do what I must do.

Remember this: “You are an expression of the almighty. The spirit of God resides within you and moves through you. Open your heart, speak to that spirit and it will heal and empower you.” My “God” has never failed me.

My heart is much more inexperienced than my body…or mind…or soul. And now as I prepare to leave this union
it is I who will be leaving with nothing.

(this was written over ten years ago at the end of a horrible relationship in which I loved very strongly and the other party wasn’t as invested as I was, but failed to clue me into the casual nature of how he viewed the relationship.) It is what it is and ten years can see that now, he is still a selfish, malicous man who has nothing except the shadow of his own delusion, and I have a rather unorthodox family, but it is more than I ever could have asked for… My family rocks! And much of my sense of isolation and throwaway nature has been alleviated, most certainly by being able to unconditionally love someone (my daughter) and have that love returned.)

I sleep fitfully even when I take my nighttime meds and I usually wake-up no less than 4 times. Lucky for me I don’t stay awake and I usually can fall asleep quickly but after three years of living with this pain I’m plumb worn out.

Wal-Mart to Offer $4 Generic Prescriptions

Wal-Mart, the nation’s largest retailer, said it would begin selling generic versions of widely prescribed drugs to its workers and customers at sharply reduced prices, a move that could force rival pharmacies to do the same.

The giant discount chain, which has used its size to knock down the costs of toys, clothing and groceries, will sell 300 generic drugs for as low as $4 for a one-month supply. On average, generic drugs cost between $10 and $30 for a 30-day prescription.

Wal-Mart will test the lower prices at 65 stores in the Tampa, Fla., area and, depending on consumer response, is likely to expand the program next year.

The drugs covered by the program treat common conditions like allergies, cholesterol, high blood pressure and diabetes. In some cases, the company said, customers could save more than 60 percent over typical generic drug costs. The lower prices will be available to the insured and the uninsured.

The Florida experiment with lower generic drug prices appears to mark the first time that Wal-Mart has used its unrivaled influence in the American economy to lower the cost of health care for its customers.

“We are able to do this by using one of the greatest strengths our company has — to take costs out of the system,” said Bill Simon, an executive vice president at the chain. “In this case, we are applying this to health care.”

In the past year, Wal-Mart has introduced several programs to improve health benefits for its workers, like extending insurance coverage to the children of part-time workers and starting a benefit plan with monthly premiums as low as $11.

Still, critics complain that health insurance is out of reach for many of Wal-mart’s 1.3 million employees in the United States, forcing thousands of them to turn to state-sponsored programs or forgo health coverage altogether.

Several states even considered legislation that would force the chain to increase its spending on health care, but only one such bill, in Maryland, became law. The law has since been struck down by a judge, and its future is in doubt.

For Wal-Mart, the lower generic drug prices could blunt criticism of its health care coverage and prove a boon to business. Wal-Mart’s chief executive, H. Lee Scott Jr., has identified the chain’s pharmacy business as an area that needs improvement, and $4 generic drugs could turn the chain into a destination for those seeking the best prices on prescriptions.

Wal-Mart said it obtained the lower generic drug prices by squeezing costs out of its already efficient supply chain, rather than pressuring drug manufacturers to lower costs.

“We are not in hard negotiations with anyone,” Mr. Simon said. “We are taking costs out of our system and passing them on to our customers.”

The new generic drug program was announced this morning at a Wal-Mart store in Tampa, with senior company executives and elected leaders in attendance.

Tweaked Firefox Lets You Surf Internet Without a Trace

Jeremy Kirk, IDG News Service Wed Sep 20, 3:00 PM ET

A tweaked version of Firefox that makes Web browsing anonymous has been released by a group of privacy-minded coders.

Every few minutes, the Torpark browser causes a computer’s IP address to appear to change. IP addresses are numeric identifier given to computers on the Internet. The number can be used along with other data to potentially track down a user, as many Web sites keep track of IP addresses.
    Hackers Promote Privacy

Torpark’s creators, a group of computer security gurus and privacy experts named Hactivismo, said they want to expand privacy rights on the Internet as new technologies increasingly collect online data.

The browser is free to download at torpark.nfshost.com. It’s a modified version of Portable Firefox, an optimized version of the browser that can be run off a USB memory stick on a computer.

The Torpark browser uses encryption to send data over The Onion Router, a worldwide network of servers nicknamed “Tor” set up to transfer data to one another in a random, obscure fashion.

Internet traffic, such as Web site requests, carries information on where it came from and where it’s going. But that’s muddled using Tor, which has been endorsed by the Electronic Frontier Foundation, and is hard to trace back to a source.
    Encryption Still Important

One minor downside is that surfing with Torpark is slower than with a typical browser over the same connection.

Torpark cautions that data sent from the last Tor server to the Web site is encrypted. Since only the user’s connection is anonymous, Torpark advises that sensitive data such as username and passwords should only be used when the browser displays a golden padlock, a sign that a Web site is using encryption.

Torpark’s user interface appears similar to Firefox with a few changes. It shows the current IP address that would be seen by Web sites in the lower right hand corner, and features a special “Flush Tor” button to reset a new, random server connection.

A test of Torpark using a computer in London employed IP addresses of servers registered in Berlin and Madison, Wisconsin

China on Writing in this Day and Age

    // September 21st, 2006 // No Comments » // Uncategorized

I write a lot! I love to write and I have *extremely* limited amounts of time in which to write. I’ve developed this style of writing which is very much akin to what it was like to be a crack addict. I know I have hardly any time to write. I know I’m not supposed to write at work, so I sneak little 2 minute sessions where I open a window and write furiously for 90 seconds, don’t usually have time to spell check or edit and then I open a mail window and send off my posts by email to my blog. Since I have MUCH security enabled on the site I have to later go through all the DRAFT posts and then post them in my own time. Again, there isn’t much time to do that so I usually open and send, open and send.

When I *don’t* do this, and my writing gets stuck in my head only a few weeks will pass before if feels like the pressure in my head will explode if I don’t write. So I’ll sneak off to a coffee shop on a day I have an extra hour or two or while my kids in ballet or something and I’ll binge-write.

It’s strange process, but there it is. Hopefully in coming years I’ll have more time I can actually sit down and compose my thoughts instead of this explosive condition I’ve come to reside it, but hey, we take what we can!

The Bush administration had to empty its secret prisons and transfer terror suspects to the military-run detention centre at Guantánamo this month in part because CIA interrogators had refused to carry out further interrogations and run the secret facilities, according to former CIA officials and people close to the programme.

The former officials said the CIA interrogators’ refusal was a factor in forcing the Bush administration to act earlier than it might have wished.

When Mr Bush announced the suspension of the secret prison programme in a speech before the fifth anniversary of the September 11 terror attacks, some analysts thought he was trying to gain political momentum before the November midterm congressional elections.

The administration publicly explained its decision in light of the legal uncertainty surrounding permissible interrogation techniques following the June Supreme Court ruling that all terrorist suspects in detention were entitled to protection under Common Article Three of the Geneva Conventions.

But the former CIA officials said Mr Bush’s hand was forced because interrogators had refused to continue their work until the legal situation was clarified because they were concerned they could be prosecuted for using illegal techniques. One intelligence source also said the CIA had refused to keep the secret prisons going.

Senior officials and Mr Bush himself have come close to admitting this by saying CIA interrogators sought legal clarity. But no official has confirmed on the record how and when the secret programme actually came to an end.

John Negroponte, director of national intelligence, who was interviewed by Fox News on Sunday, said in response to a question of whether CIA interrogators had refused to work: “I think the way I would answer you in regard to that question is that there’s been precious little activity of that kind for a number of months now, and certainly since the Supreme Court decision.”

In an interview with the Financial Times, John Bellinger, legal adviser to the state department, went further, saying there had been “very little operational activity” on CIA interrogations since the passage last December of a bill proposed by Senator John McCain outlawing torture and inhumane treatment of prisoners.

Mr Bellinger said the secret prisons remained empty for the moment. But he defended the US position that use of such prisons did not contravene international conventions as some in Europe have argued. He also said that, theoretically, the Pentagon as well as the CIA had the legal right to run such facilities. The CIA declined to comment.

Key figures among the 14 prisoners transferred to Guantánamo, including Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, had been held in secret centres for three years or more.

    Naked Man tending Cannibus field

    Police cannabis factory shock
POLICE raiding a lock-up were greeted by a naked man tending to his cannabis factory, a court heard.
Officers found 638 plants growing in the Hastings unit rented by 42-year-old David Churchward, a crop worth up to an estimated £229,000. He admitted producing cannabis but told officers he had started growing the Class C drug to help his wife who suffers from bad health and finds it difficult to sleep. Lewes Crown Court heard Churchward, who used to run a courier firm, had gone bankrupt and that since his arrest his home in Tuppenny Close had been repossessed.
He was given a suspended jail sentence after a judge decided it was unlikely he would offend again. Marcus Fletcher, prosecuting, told the court: “On April 9 last year, police executed a search warrant at unit 12, Moorhurst Road. “They found the defendant naked. They also found a sophisticated factory producing cannabis plants. “He was arrested and interviewed. He said he was growing them for his wife who could not sleep. “He said he knew it was unlawful but did not accept doing it for financial gain. He said he was going to freeze it for his wife.
“There were 638 plants seized in different stages of growth with a value of between £114,000 to £200,000. That would provide 287,100 reefers. “Therefore we would suggest the idea that it was just for his wife is unbelievable.” William Eaglestone, defending, said: “There is no evidence as to how many plants would have made it through to commercial level.
“As with any crop it’s unclear what the precise yield would be. This was something that began in midsummer 2004. The previous harvest he had succeeded in reaping 60 plants. “This is not a case where he is charged with supply, or where there is any evidence of supply.”
Passing a 51-week prison sentence but suspending it for two years and imposing a 12-month supervision order, Judge Simon Coltart told Churchward: “I take the view this was a one-off offence.
“I think there is no risk of you getting involved in the production of drugs again. “But this is a serious matter as it is large-scale production and therefore must be met with a period of imprisonment. “But I will suspend that period of imprisonment.”
It is believed Churchward was naked when police arrived so he would not get the smell of cannabis on his clothing.

Bush takes honours in World Stupidity Awards

U.S. President George Bush is a big winner in this year’s World Stupidity Awards, joining the likes of the entire petroleum industry and Vice President Dick Cheney as the recipients of top honours

Bush was nominated in several categories, including Stupidest Statement of the Year and Most Out of Touch with Reality in the awards roundup which was created to “salute achievement in ignorance and stupidity.”

But the big winner, taking home the prize for the flagship category Stupidest Man of the Year, was District Judge Donald Thompson.

Known as the “Oklahoma Penis Pump Judge,” Thompson operated a powerful penis pump underneath his robes — while court was in session — during at least three trials. He was convicted on June 29 of four counts of felony indecent exposure.

The awards, now in their fourth year, were created by Canadian actor, director and journalist Albert Nerenberg who worked with the philosophy that “we’re all stupid, some of us just need to have it pointed out.”

He first came up with the idea four years ago while working on a documentary on the subject of stupidity. As a publicity stunt for the film, a mock event called the World Stupidity Awards was held. The event garnered international coverage from mainstream media such as the BBC, and Nerenberg realized he was onto something.

Now in its fourth year, the awards show has continued to garner attention, with nominations submitted online and a panel of judges deciding the winners. Nerenberg hopes it will eventually become an annual television special.

In addition to Bush and Thompson, there are other worthy winners this year.

Harry Whittington won the Stupidest Statement of the Year award, for apologizing after Vice-President Dick Cheney shot him during a hunting outing.

“My family and I are deeply sorry for all that Vice President Cheney and his family have had to go through this past week,” Whittington said at the time, still weak and visibly bruised from the birdshot that Cheney peppered him with.

Whittington beat out Mel Gibson’s statement: “What do you think you’re looking at, sugar tits?” which he made to a female sergeant following his arrest for drunk driving.

Not to be outdone, Cheney took his own award, winning the “Dumbest Moment of the Year” award for the act of shooting Whittington.

The petroleum industry took honours for reckless endangerment of the planet, and Fox News was recognized for having “Best Furthered Ignorance,” in the world.

Basic Instinct 2, starring Sharon Stone, beat out Little Man and The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, among others, to take the title of Stupidest Movie of the Year.

Stupidest Trend of the Year was won cleanly by “Killing people for God.”

Bush took honours in the category of “Stupidest Statement by George W. Bush.” The president’s televised statement to FEMA director Michael Brown during the Hurricane Katrina devastation: “Brownie, you’re doing a heck of a job,” won easily.

Bush also won for being Most out of Touch with Reality

The Middle East won the Lifetime Achievement Award for Stupidity.

Nick Flynn won the award for Making a Stupid Situation Stupider by tripping on his shoelaces, falling down a set of stairs and smashing three antique Chinese vases in a museum. He then criticized the museum for not taking better care of the precious artifacts

Nerenberg is currently finishing off Escape to Canada, a documentary about Americans fleeing their country. Nerenberg is also a series for Discovery Channel about the science of sexual attraction called Why Is It Sexy?
