Tiny House Project: Shikibuton (futon mattress)

I needed a new bed.  When I moved I got rid of my 10 year old mattress and I wanted to research my next bed.  My goal it to live simply and efficiently.  I didn’t want a luxury box spring, mattress and frame.  I wanted something that was very comfy, but also easy to move.  Another selling point for me was it being small primarily designed for one person.

I found out about shikibuton while I was researching futon mattresses.  Its basically the futon mattress.  The one I selected is 9″ thick and has 6 layers of organic wool, cotton and individually wrapped coil springs.  It’s wonderful.

Now I need the base and I’m not sure if I’m going to go the traditional route of tatami mat or the more practical route of norka Chicago frame.
