YAY!!! February bites the Dust for 2010!

February is overFebruary is over.

The Great Grey Beast of February, which tries to eat me each and every year, has lopped back to its wolf-cave with its tail between its leg.  It gave a good fight, but it is March the ‘effin First and I’m.  Still.  Standing….

Huzzah.

Now get with the green and gardening. I’ve got a faery gate to build before solstice 2010.

Wow…I found this today and…just wow.

I use Google Reader to keep up on a ridiculous amount of media in any given day.  Google Buzz keeps me connected with other Googleheads.  I have an Android phone.  My Reader feed offers “recomendations” based on what I have already subscribed to and “liked” or “shared.”  Today it gave me this:

The Feathers Fall Slowly

Maybe you don’t know them like I do. Maybe it’s vengeance and maybe it’s love.
Maybe they’re smiling at other people the way they used to smile at me.
Maybe they’ve grown tired of drinking light like water, late at night.

Or Maybe, they’re just tired. You don’t know them like I do.

and yeah…I’ll be tracking this one from now on.  Good, good stuff…

Hit-Girl…the movie!

this would be a yes, yes, y’all…

FairyGate: The Back-40 at the House-of-Chaos gets transformed into a fae-gate.

fairy gate1

Faery Gate

I know I’m not supposed to do it, but I can’t stand it anymore.  I completely understand that “no gates, bridges or other thoroughfares are to be built, opened or unblocked to allow the free transfer of beings from fae-to-terrin.”

Bollocks.

I’m building one.  In the back-40 of the House-of-Chaos I’m building a fairy gate.  It will open on the Summer Solstice of 2010.  Just try and stop me.

In preparation, here is a list of plants to make the fae more welcome in the garden.  Since this is the last week of February, and I’m convinced that Spring, in all her glory, is right around the corner…I better get crackin’ on the yard plans.

Try planting some of these faery favorites in your garden!

[ from: http://www.afaeryhunt.com/fairyfun.htm ]

  • BLUEBELLS: Faeries are summoned to their midnight revels and dances by the ringing of these tiny flowers.
  • FERNS: Pixie faeries are especially fond of ferns. One story tells of a young woman who accidentally sat on a fern, and instantly a faery man appeared and forced her to promise to watch over his faery son and remain in Faeryland for a year and a day. Ferns make nice soft beds for the little guys.
  • FOXGLOVE: The name “foxglove” came from the words “folk’s glove.” Folks referred to little people, or faeries. One legend says that faeries gave the blossoms to foxes to wear as gloves so they would not get caught raiding the chicken coop. According to another legend, if you picked foxglove, you would offend the faeries. And if the faeries stole your baby, the juice of the foxglove would help to get it back. In some stories, foxglove appears as a faery’s hat. Foxglove can sometimes heal and sometimes hurt. It is a poisonous plant, but it is also used as medicine to treat heart disease.
  • HEATHER: lights the flame of fairy passions and may open the gates between the fairy world and our own.
  • MUSHROOMS: Used by faeries as tables and stools. The species Amanita is the red and white mushrooms very poisonous….
  • PANSIES: These may be used in fairy love potions.
  • POPPIES: These will bring faeries into your dreams.
  • PRIMROSES: Primroses are one key into faeryland. There is a German legend about a little girl who found a doorway covered in flowers, and when she touched it with a primrose, the door opened up, leading into an enchanted faery castle.
  • RAGWORT, CABBAGE STALKS, GRASS and STRAW: All of these were used by faeries for transportation in the same manner as a witch uses a broom.
  • ROSES: The sweet smell and soft petals of roses attract faeries to your garden. A popular love spell uses roses. Sprinkle rose petals under your feet and dance on them softly while asking the Faery for a blessing on your magic
  • SAFFRON CROCUS: The stamens from this fall flowering crocus constitute the herb saffron. Any food prepared with saffron is a favorite faery food. Saffron used as a dye will turn cloth a royal gold. Such cloth is very valuable to faeries.
  • THYME: Wear a sprig of thyme to increase your ability to see the wee ones. Thyme may also be planted by the doors and windows of your house to invite the fairies to come inside.
  • TULIPS: The faeries like to use the tulip bloom to put their babies to bed.

Some other faery favorites are rosemary, heartsease, and forgetmenots.

“On Children” by Kahlil Gibran

Your children are not your children.
They are the sons and daughters of Life’s longing for itself.
They come through you but not from you,
And though they are with you yet they belong not to you.

You may give them your love but not your thoughts,
For they have their own thoughts.
You may house their bodies but not their souls,
For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow,
which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams.
You may strive to be like them,
but seek not to make them like you.
For life goes not backward nor tarries with yesterday.

You are the bows from which your children
as living arrows are sent forth.
The archer sees the mark upon the path of the infinite,
and He bends you with His might
that His arrows may go swift and far.
Let your bending in the archer’s hand be for gladness;
For even as He loves the arrow that flies,
so He loves also the bow that is stable.

Lots of Snow

In honor of the “Lots of Snow” we have been getting…I present, for your viewing pleasure, Dark Roasted Blends post on ‘Lots of Snow‘.  Well work the click.  Enjoy.

If you’ve been snowed under for some time, these pictures will help you feel better

“Have you entered the storehouses of the snow?…” (Job, 38:22) Some translations put it as “the treasures of the snow”. Well, it seems some locations get entirely too much of this good thing:

Snowed under in the most epic way (somewhere in Switzerland):

Congrats to the NIHF:STEM “Fuzzy Bunnies”

from the Akron Public Schools newsletter:

STEM School learning coach Carol Schweizer and her advisory group, The Fuzzy Bunnies, spearheaded a blood drive that netted 33 pints of blood for the American Red Cross. The drive was a service learning project for the Fuzzy Bunnies. STEM School parents who donated on behalf of their students had the students’ names entered into a drawing for free Cleveland Cavs basketball tickets. The five winners – Nicholas Lewis, Dylan Nicodemus, Sarah Nikic, Dylan Smith and Gavin Wilson – will receive pregame recognition by taking shots at the basket on the Cavs main court.

Go Coach Schweizer and her Fuzzie Bunnies, for such excellent work on the blood drive.

Think that it’s fun, China, that you’re guided, and that all is well; that there’s time, that life is easy, and that the best has yet to come.

Think that the reasons that elude you will one day catch up, that the lessons that have stumped you will one day bring joy, and that the sorrows that have crippled you will soon give you wings.

Think that you’re important, that you cannot fail, and that happiness always returns.

And think that you’re beautiful, China.

I do.

Wolf Moon – 013010 @ 131am

Wolf MoonLast night was the January Full-Moon, also known as the Wolf Moon.  It was big and delightful and made a lot of people I know a little more crazy than usual.

Mia and I started the evening when I picked her up from school.  We walked out of her building and stared into the huge wondrous thing and began to howl like beasts. Then we dropped to all fours and ran to the car…

The teachers already think we’re eccentric.  I can’t wait to see what happens after this!

Later I spent time with Sirius, Venus and the lunar son.  We giggled and the flames rose higher…

We danced in a circle around a central fire.  The Indigo Children come.   Wine and song.  Food and fire.  Clothes, shelter and sea.

No more need for the old empire.  The Indigo Children come.

DARKMOON / SOL ECLIPSE – January 14, 2010

Lunar Phases 2010

Thursday’s solar eclipse — closely conjunct your ruling planet, Venus — promises to change your outlook on 4th House matters for years to come. The 4th House symbolizes home, family, a parent, property, and your foundations in life — especially the family patterns passed down through the generations. I think it’s not too much of a stretch to say we can use our family patterns or be used by them — much as a virus uses a human host to perpetuate itself. This week is an opportunity to achieve some striking clarity about any family patterns that have held you hostage to your parents’ unanswered questions and kept you from living out your life and your dreams. As always, awareness is the first and most important step in healing your life.

This is a time for quiet and heart centered activities. Even if you are on your own at odd points it won’t bother you, since it will give you time for personal reflection. But really a happy family life and contented domestic situation is what you want. You don’t want to be overwhelmed by the things of the outside world.

A family matter may be taking longer to resolve than you expected, but your extra effort today could be the catalyst needed to push the situation along. However, part of the problem may be that you are stuck holding a perspective that is no longer working for you. Reconsider your position; changing your mind can have a positive impact on those around you and enable you to get things moving again.

You need a lot of reassurance and the trust of people around you. At work, you will be able to emerge, thanks to a stroke of luck. In Love, you should avoid being presumptuous. Tip: keep your promises.

Daily Vedic Moon Sign horoscope
Capricorn – 14 Jan 2010

Today an overwhelming problem is going to require your undivided analytical attention. You should be practical and subdued. A relative could approach you to share your thoughts on an issue. Be modest in your outlook today.

Daily Chinese Sign horoscope
Dog – 14 Jan 2010

Don’t be naive in your dealings with others today. Take care not to fall victim to a scheme or cleverly devised plan. You don’t have to be suspicious of everyone you encounter now, just alert and perceptive. If you’re having trouble trusting your own instincts, turn to someone whom you know you can go to for advice.

Rune:  ANSUZ
Wisdom and Creative Energy

Ansuz symbolizes creativity in all its forms.  Words, music, the birth of a child, or an endeavor which is coming to fruition.   Life force and ambition are also represented here.  Inspiration, wisdom and spiritual knowledge.

I-Ching:  Kun “The Receptive” (#02)
The Receptive is the hexagram denoting “devotion” and the spirit of the Earth.  Fertile ground is required for creation. The hexagram of “the receptive” often has a strong female meaning, but can denote a powerful relationship between either a man and a woman, a father and son or between friends.  A conscious act of devotion and a willingness to stand by that person, principle or force which sustains us, guides us or fills us with energy.

I-Ching: Tung Jen “Fellowship” (#12)
To achieve your aims, you will have to unite with virtuous people. Indeed it will be easier to reach every objective if a group of individuals( albeit of different characters), had the same common goal. However always keep your own personality and act so that you enrichen one another.

Mia made the front page of the Akron Beacon Journal for her presentation on the Panzer wetlands for the STEM school!

Making it their own

Akron STEM students conclude wetlands project by sharing presentation with adults

By John Higgins
Beacon Journal staff writer

Published on Thursday, Dec 31, 2009

Ten weeks after a University of Akron biology professor asked for help on a wetlands restoration project, the students at the National Inventors Hall of Fame middle school presented their findings.

They had rehearsed for weeks and now, on Dec. 4, their parents, teachers and guests sat in folding chairs in the school gym awaiting their arrival.

The fifth-graders filed in and sat on the floor in front of a podium. Those chosen by their classmates to make the presentation took seats in folding chairs along the wall behind the podium.

The kids already had demonstrated mastery by scoring an average of 80 percent or better on a variety of measures, including an old-fashioned paper and pencil test. Now they had to show what they’d learned to a roomful of adults. Their principal, Traci Buckner, gave a brief introduction.

”I will now turn this experience over to our educators for the day, your children, our learners,” Buckner said.

The adults in the audience — including the University of Akron biologist who had asked for their help, Jessica Hopkins, and the former muck farmer who had shared his land, Steve Panzner — had all contributed to creating a memorable experience.

Today, they would find out whether the children had made that experience their own. Students each took turns at a podium narrating a slide presentation playing behind them on a large screen, describing their research.

Then fifth-grader Mia Darrington, her brown hair pulled back in a neat ponytail, brought her notes to the podium and addressed the audience in a professional voice that belied her age.

”As we were the first group to ever go up and enjoy the Panzner Wetland Wildlife Preserve, we felt compelled to share our data with others,” Mia began. ”As Jerry and Steve Panzner are committed to education, we decided to focus on educating others of the importance of a wetland habitat.”

She then described how the students created a kid-friendly field guide to the Panzner wetlands with photos and written descriptions of the plants, insects, birds and animals likely to be found there.

They had written and illustrated
the field guide themselves, including the brightly colored cover by Kennedy Hunter.

”Throughout our research, we used a writing process that helped us have the best work possible,” Mia said. ”We wrote a rough draft of our thoughts and then we peer-edited one another’s work. With my partner, we found that we needed to write all over that first draft.”

Looking up from her notes, Mia smiled at the audience.

”We peer-edited a lot, and I mean a lot of times,” she said, eliciting murmurs of confirmation from the kids on the floor.

Katrina Halasa, the district’s science specialist, who had brought the university’s urgent request to the school 10 weeks earlier, was smiling too, tears filling her eyes.

The idea of checking each other’s work was essential in the real world of science, where scientists submit their work to the scrutiny of their colleagues. That these kids understood a concept such as ”peer review” was huge.

When the fifth-graders concluded their project, they presented Steve Panzner with a copy of their field guide.

Panzner, in blue jeans and and rolled-up sleeves, grinned and accepted the guide.

He praised their work and thanked the kids for giving him and his brother, Jerry, a new perspective on the land they’d known all their lives.

”Sometimes we look at it so many times that we miss the wonder of what it is,” Panzner said. ”We looked at it through different eyes, your eyes, and it was extremely fun and extremely educating for us, and we do appreciate you coming out.”

And then the UA professor who sought their help addressed the students, this time in person instead of by video.

”Impressed does not even come close to the feeling I have right now,” Hopkins said. ”You guys did a fabulous job. I’m just blown away at what you’ve learned and how you have expressed what you’ve learned. It’s really just astounding to see, so thank you for such an amazing job.”

The sixth-graders appointed Donavan Wray to lead their presentation, and he dressed the part, wearing a crisp blue shirt and tie.

”I would like to thank you all for coming. I am Donavan Wray and I will be the master of ceremonies for today’s presentation of learning.”

He outlined the sixth-graders’ research and invited representatives from each study group to describe the Web pages they had built, which included video games they designed themselves to make the pages interactive and interesting.

The final group showed a PowerPoint slide show summing up the sixth-graders’ findings.

”Thank you, PowerPoint group,” Donavan said. ”I hope that all of our Web sites have helped to show you what we have learned by evaluating Panznerland. At this time, I would like to introduce our closing speaker, Maya Frazier, who will share a story about holding an amphibian and how that helped her determine the health of Panznerland.”

He turned the microphone over to Maya, whose mother was watching from the audience. Maya wore the grayish-black sweater and gray boots she had received from her grandmother the week before on her 12th birthday.

”Panznerland is a healthy ecosystem for animals and plants, because there are no mutations, the pH level of the water was where it was supposed to be, and some tadpoles are maturing into frogs,” she said. ”Speaking of tadpoles, I actually got to hold one in my hand. It was slippery, slimy, gooey and interactive. But that’s good, because that meant that that tadpole was healthy.”

She also recalled the predatory beetle that killed the tadpole.

”My first time seeing a beetle was when my teacher, Coach [Christine] Justiss, who was running that station, showed us one,” she said. ”My opinion is: I thought it was big and nasty because I’m not the type of girl who likes bugs, but it was still cool.”

Donavan concluded by noting that the students had all written letters to U.S. Rep. Betty Sutton sharing their results and urging her to support funding to enable other students to learn from the wetlands.

Educators had spent years planning this school and months designing its first buildingwide project, but schools aren’t made for adults.

The student presentations ended with a slide show of their experiences at Panznerland.

The lights in the gymnasium were dimmed and the slide show began, accompanied by the first bouncy notes of the hit pop song Fireflies by Owl City, a song about the power of dreams.
You would not believe your eyes
If ten million fireflies
Lit up the world as I fell
asleep. . . .

The students murmured and laughed in the dark, pointing at snapshots of themselves and their teachers at Panznerland.

As the slide show finished, the students spontaneously joined in the song’s hopeful chorus, their voices surging as one on the final words:
I’d like to make myself believeThat planet Earth turns,
slowly. . . .

This was their song, their project, their school, their time.

Good Yule to y’all – Winter Solstice 2009

A lovely Yule poem by Richard De Angelis:

‘Twas the night before Yule, when all ‘cross the heath,
not a being was stirring; Pagan, faerie, or beast.
Wassail was left out & the alter adorned,
to rejoice that the Sun King would soon be reborn.

The children lay sleeping by the warmth of the hearth,
their dreams filled with visions of belov’d Mother Earth.
M’lady & I beneath blankets piled deep,
had just settled down to our own Solstice sleep.

Then a noise in the night that would leave us no peace,
Awakened us both to the honking of geese.
Eager to see such a boisterous flock,
When we raced to the window, our mouths dropped in shock!

On the west wind flew a gaggle of geese white & gray,
With Frau Holda behind them in her giftladen dray.
The figure on her broomstick in the north sky made it clear,
La Befana was approaching to bestow Yuletide cheer.

From the south came a comet more bright than the moon,
And we knew that Lucia would be with us soon.
As these spirits sailed earthward o’er hilltops & trees,
Frau Holda serenaded her feathery steeds:

“Fly Isolde! Fly Tristan! Fly Odin & Freya!
Fly Morgaine! Fly Merlin! Fly Uranus & Gaea!
“May the God & the Goddess inside you soar,
From the clouds in the heavens to yon cottage door.”

As soft & silent as snowflakes they fell:
Their arrival announced by a faint chiming bell.
They landed like angels, their bodies aglow.
Their feet left no marks in the new fallen snow.

Before we could ponder what next lay in store,
There came a slow creaking from our threshold door.
We crept from our bedroom & were spellbound to see
…There in our parlor stood the Yule Trinity!

Lucia, the Maiden, with her head wreathed in flame,
Shown with the radiance for which she was named.
The Lightbringer’ s eyes held the joy of a child,
And she spoke with a voice that was gentle, yet wild:

“May the warmth of this household ne’er fade away.”
Then she lit our Yule log which still burns to this day.
Frau Holda in her down cloak stood regal & tall;
The Matron of Solstice, the Mother of all.

Under her gaze we felt safe & secure.
Her voice was commanding, yet almost demure:
“May the love of this family enrich young & old.”
And from the folds of her cloak showered coins of pure gold.

Le Befana wore a kerchief on her silvery hair;
The veil of the Crone who has secrets to share.
In her eyes gleamed a wisdom only gained by spent youth.
Her voice was a whisper but her words rung with truth:

“May health, glad tidings, and peace fill these rooms.”
And she banished misfortune with a sweep of her broom.
They then left a gift by each sleeping child’s head,
Took a drink of our wassail, and away they sped.

While we watched them fly off through the night sky we laughed,
At the wondrous magick we had found in the Craft
As they departed, the spirits decreed
Merry Yule To You All & May All Blessed Be!

Fraser Fir

Every year the strong and sturdy females  of the Darrington clan trek into the wilderness to track and hunt the annual House-of-Chaos holiday tree.  This year was no exception and China and Mia felled a well-endowed Fraiser Fir for the foyer of the new Tiny House.

We aimed, took our shot and together we carried the lucky fir tree back to 8th Street were we mounted it, dressed it and trimmed the heck out of it before loading up the presents underneath.

Mia poses with her conquered tree The Raising of the Annual House-of-Chaos Xmas Tree!
