Day of Sekhmet

// August 3rd, 2010 // No Comments » // PAS, magick

A music video made in honor of the day of Sekhmet – The protector of the pharaohs and led them in warfare. As an Eye of Ra it was Sekhmets duty to destroy the Pharaohs enemies in battle. She brought about plague and pestilence when appropriate – none of her actions were ever undeserved. All balanced in True Light.

Brave the Darkness

// July 29th, 2010 // No Comments » // china, inspiration, life the universe and everything, magick, spirit, wisdom

This is my new favorite artist/mage; Monsiure Panos Tsagaris.

He has inspired me in ways words cannot describe in both worlds; mundane and magick.

I know I can brave the darkness. I know I can obtain the light.
Now, I share that sentiment with you.

Hard choices. Eyes down. One foot in front of the other. Left foot. Right food. Breathe. That is how we get where we are going.

Sometimes there are humans next to us. Sometimes there are not. But we. are. never. never. never alone.

Never ever.

The Heart of Each Song

// July 17th, 2010 // 1 Comment » // magick

The soul of each song is as follows: [from: The Seven Songs of Wizardry

  1. Changing - All of us, all living things, have the potential to change. Merlin also thinks of a relevant saying his mother told him – The butterfly can change from a mere worm to the most beautiful creature of all. And the soul, my son, can do the same.
  2. Binding - The strongest bonds are of the heart
  3. Protecting - The best way to protect something is to set it free. Naming – For a true name holds true power
  4. Leaping - Everything is connected to everything else.
  5. Eliminating - Every living thing is precious somehow.
  6. Seeing - The heart can see things invisible to the eye.

The Seven Songs of Wizardry,
One melody and many,
May guide ye to the Otherworld,
Though hope ye have not any.

Divine the truth within each Song
Before ye may proceed.
For truths like trees for ages grow,
Yet each begins a seed.

Pursue the Seven Songs in turn;
The parts beget the whole.
But never move until ye find
Each Song’s essential soul. (more…)

Shadowperson #01

// June 16th, 2010 // No Comments » // art, art, magick

Back in 2004 I started making “Shadowpeople.”  These were folk-art sculpture made from found wood and painted with acrylics, ash, pigments, blood and all sorts of other ritual items. There are to be a complete set of 34 shadowpeople and to this day only 18 have been made.

They were originally a way for me to process some paradigm-shifts and some manifest world dilemmas.  They are both guardians and friends.  Some are fun, some are scary.  I think they are all parts of myself.

This was found on the reverse side of Shadowperson #01.  The first guy I made:

The first of the 34 Watchers to come.  Not “my” Watchers, but “the” Watchers.  They came through me, but only because I’m the ABRAXAS gate.

Just got back from a weeekend at The Omega Institute, where I met incredible people who know kindness matters and mindful actions will change the world. I saw sparks of dream manifest in material and spiritual ways. My soul breathed and released the aches of my spine. I saw hope everywhere and my majick sparkled everywhere for all to see and no one tried to swat it away. Communed with fantastic friends and partners of The Path and food and furry forest creatures who have learned that humans aren’t reallly so bad…at least here they aren’t.

Nice.

Everything in life has a side effect, doesn’t it? In this dualistic world when you are granted a boon, there is usually a cost somewhere. Checks and balances. Very little in this world is true black or whitel, clear-cut decisions unless the eyes (and mind) are so closed that any gradiation or perception is eliminated. So stay open. Stay awake. What you see makes a difference. What you say has effect. What you do….makes you who you are.

Surrender to the magic, China. That’s why it’s there. That’s why you’re there — to learn that there really are miracles and that they abound, as if on command, once you understand the truth about your reality and heritage.

Surrender, yet prepare.

Ask, yet expect.

You can do this. You’ve been doing it your entire life. Be swift and awaken to the truth, because for the new souls now watching, your successes will also be theirs.

It’s good to be you,

Griffin’s Passing

Griffin - My faithful familiar

Griffin - My faithful familiar

On September 26, 2009 my 13-year-old familiar and faithful kitty Griffin passed away.

In July of 2008 he has something akin to a stroke and was all wobbly for about a week.  He had stabilized by the time I took him to the vet a few days later, but inside I knew that I was living with him on borrowed time.

MardiGriffin

MardiGriffin

I got Griffin as a spindly-legged Louisiana Swamp Cat.  I was living in New Orleans in 1996 and was thinking about getting a kitty.  I was actually talking to a friend aobut this when outside the window of Kaldi’s Coffee House on Decatur in the French Quarter I see this wispy little orange ring-tail sauntering past a window.  Since the window was about five feet off the sidewalk I ran out to see what it was doing.  Outside were some gutter-punks spanging on the corner and I asked if that was their kitty and could I hold it.

They told me that some friends came through town with him and left him there and that there were trying to find a home for the little guy.  I told them not to worry that I’d take him.  So Griffin rode down Esplanade with me, riding inside my scooter helmet and covered in fleas.

In those first days he got no fewer than five flea baths with different products, but every time I dunked him in a bucket of dip all the fleas would just climb up to his head.  So dense were his fleas that they literally would fall off his head into the water because they had no more real-estate left up top.

And so, on day five we went to the vet and invested a couple of hundred bucks in a brand-new flea medication called “Front-line” and “Advantage”.  It was the first time I had ever a significant chunk of my own money in taking care of an animal.  And with that, the fleas died, his shots were up to date, he was registered to me on his rabies tag and I had my first baby!

It was just him and me for the first two years and he moved with me from NOLA to Colorado, where I followed a guy.  That relationship quickly deteriorated and I moved back to Ohio, with Griffin to recollect during the summer.  I learned I left Colorado with more than myself and Griffin when I learned in July that I was pregnant.  Griffin and I had many deep conversations on the back patio and I decided that I was going to undertake the responsibility of being a single mom.  As I bought baby stuff, Griffin thought I was buying him elaborate cat toys.

The Legendary Pink Dots – “Golden Dawn” (video)

// November 19th, 2009 // No Comments » // life the universe and everything, magick, personal, spirit

I’ll be your slave, maybe you’ll be my priestess. I’d live in a cave and we’d meet where all eyes are turned away. Where we can lay, where we can play… and forget the storm. Will you weep while I slip away… at Golden Dawn? You drew a star, and I drew a circle. We hid in the car, we crossed our fingers and hurtled down the street. The fog was creeping slow, the deathbird peeping through the window. We drove on and found our way to Golden Dawn. I read the news and you heard the sirens. We packed, then we flew to an island which no-one else could find. Where we could hide and watch the tide slide in at twilight. We made love… on and on ’til Golden Dawn.

Sacred Time and the Search for Meaning by Gary Eberle

// September 26th, 2009 // No Comments » // House-of-Chaos, life the universe and everything, magick, news, professional, spirit

I read.  A lot.  I know this.  It is a big, wide world out there and I’ve got a lot to learn about it. I’ve given up trying to understand much of it and instead embraced just participating more fully in the experience.  I’ve learned that the magick moments happen when I share authentic, open interaction with something; a being, a place, a thought.  I’ve learned that all of these majick moments pass and that its useless to cling to the transient pleasures they bring.  I’ve learned that its all good…even the bad stuff.

Sacred Time & The Search for Meaning by Gary Eberle

Sacred Time & The Search for Meaning by Gary Eberle

The book “Sacred Time and the Search for Meaning” by Gary Eberle is one such book that illustrated the need to create sacred time in our everyday lives.  Yes, that included you, ‘busy person’ and you too ‘single mom’.  It’s not about running off to an ashram for two months a year or shirking responsibilities, it’s about weaving sacred moments; an hour a day, a day a week, a week a month and a month a year, into your busy, busy lives.

Table of Contents:

  1. No Time like the Present
  2. A Sense of Timing
  3. Time and Eternity
  4. Book of Hours
  5. The Triumph of the Clock
  6. In Search of Sacred Time
  7. Finding Sacred Time

In Sacred Time and the Search for Meaning, author Gary Eberle contemplates how humans’ view of time has evolved throughout history, how we came to measure time, and why we feel especially starved for it now. Eberle seeks to rediscover a renewed sense of meaning in life through looking for ways to enter the realm of sacred time or “sabbath time”—where we can reconnect with the slower, deeper rhythms of life that have traditionally been experienced through worship, prayer, and the observance of holy days. Drawing from the work of Western philosophers from Aristotle to Heidegger, and on theorists from Jung to Foucault, he presents both an intellectual history of time and a personal account of his own search for sacred time. Along the way he formulates an insightful analysis of our culture’s obsession with speed and efficiency, and he offers guidance for slowing down to savor life outside of schedules and routines, showing the way toward finding fulfillment in this increasingly accelerated world.

PAS-Meriti: “The Passion of Isis & Osiris” study group

Since June I’ve been involved with this years PAS-Meriti group.  It’s a small, online group dedicated to reading some of the books available on Ancient Egyptian magick and culture and improving our personal practices as we dedicate to the neter of approach.  This year, I forwent my approach to Nebet-Het and instead began my learning of the goddess Sekhmet.

The Passion of Isis & Osiris: A Gateway to Transcendent Love

The Passion of Isis & Osiris: A Gateway to Transcendent Love

The first book, which we are concluding this month is “The Passion of Isis & Osiris:  A Gateway to Trancendent Love“. This book, by Jean Houston, has proven invaluable to me in my quest for spiritual and physical longing for my personal “Beloved.”  The archetypal characters of the dualistic Isis/Osiris/Nebet-Het/Set or Isis/Nebet-Het/Osiris/Set as the case may be, have illuminated the dualistic nature of everything that exists in punctual time and the unity that may be achieved within the self and soul of durative time.

Each chapter has a “process” to execute at the end to deepen our understanding and experience of the information presented.  I have been using UStream to record a narrative of these processes so that I may use them as a “solo journeyer”.  I have been trying to post my study question answers and notations both here and at the PAS-Meriti group page.

We are up to chapter 9, 10 & 11 this week.  I will try to update this post as we conclude this book and move onto Rosemary Clark’s “The Sacred Tradition in Ancient Egypt” in October.

To keep all my ducks in a row I’m trying to keep organized of the notes, study questions & processes so I can have one post to refer back to all the work surrounding this individual book.

PAS-Meriti: Ch.7 (Study Questions)

— In PAS_Meriti@yahoogroups.com,  wrote:

> Discuss Magick.

—Magick was entrenched in the ancient Egyptian life, but the farther up the initiation path, the more closely guarded the heka were.  The secrets were to be trusted to only those who were both worthy and have given evidence that they could be entrusted to preserve and pass on the lineage.

Magic was considered different from sorcery in that magic was the raising and working with “natural cosmic energy” by harmonic means, whereas sorcery concerned itself with influencing the “psychological ambiance” of humans.  The book says both are valid; there are both white and black magicks and sorcery.

> Describe the Egyptian Priesthood. What was a Pharoah, and what did they do?

—The Egyptian Priesthood were called “sesh per ankh” and the temples they worked in were “per ankh”.  They were considered “Scribes in the House of Life”.  They performed a myriad of functions; healing, psychotherapy, scribe/archivist.  They served only 1/4 of the year in their priest function, and when not performing their priestly duties they lived as family men and participated as householders in their communities. While they were cloistered they bathed 4X/day (oh, to be able to ritually bathe as the Egyptians did…I would love it.)  They were separate from their families and abstained from indulgences including sex and gluttony.

The Khenerit were the cloistered priestesses who kept sanctuary and were also initiated as “wives of the Gods”  The Ounuit priestesses assisted in birthing and used a divination practice to read the future of the birthed child.

The Pharaoh was considered the son of the god, incarnate and he was the highest priest of all.  He held both the crook and the flail which represented that he was both Shepard and warrior.  It is said that in the earliest dynasties the Pharaoh may have been literally sacrificed in order to ensure fertility and prosperity to his lands.  Later this transformed into the Pharaoh’s Heb Sed festival where the Pharaoh has the divine task of dying and re-emerging with “The Secret of the Two Partners”.  These form the basis for the Osirian initiatory mysteries.  The Pharaoh made both magick and miracles.  They were amazing physicians and with written word, magick wants and fetishes they combated disease and protected from illness as surely as any of our “modern” medicines.  I love the tale of an early pregnancy test made from wheat and barley.  The alleged pregnant woman is to pour her urine on both grain sacks and if wheat sprouted first the woman was pregnant with a boy and if barley, a girl.   That’s pretty sophisticated!

Ch. 6 – Neters: Agents of Creation

The Neter as the God in Nature – Houston describes how the divine impulses of the neters reveal themselves in the natural world and in the body.  That they are the “rock bed” of our first spiritual longing.  Having my neters be revealed to me calls to my pagan upbringing.  The farming and the observation of the cycles of nature and “each thing to its place” gave rhythm and ritual to many aspects of my mundane life and allowed me to connect to my Divinity by my daily tasks.

For me, my neter has been Nebet-Het, and she manifests in the shadows, the wisdom that comes after a statement or revelation, and in the after-images after blinding light.  She reveals herself in the duty of fulfiling my obligations and in the dark moons.

–Neter as Archetype – TPoI&O describes neters operating on a psychological level and that they both create and hold patterns.  They are the “embodiment of an ancient consciousness.”  They served as motivating principles which the ancient Egyptians could aspire.  I know that I’ve used many of the neters to help me become more “aligned” to a certain current or aspect of personality.  I’ve learned how to be a fierce hunter from Set, a nurturing mother from Isis, a practical nursemaid and humble helpmate from Nebet-Het.  I learned how to keep my heart light when I consider Ma’at and her feather.  My home is protected from lessons learned from Anpu (Anubis).

–The Appearance of Neters – Neters may appear in entirely animal guise, or as humans with animal heads, or entirely human.  When appearing as animal, they represent a principle of organic life on  Caosaga.    When they appear in human form with the head of an animal they symbolize a function of activity.  Illustrated is Thoth, appearing with an Ibis head, and representing being the keeper of knowledge and archives.  An anthropomorphic neter might embody wisdom, urge or asset.  When they are shown in entirely human guise they are to represent the transcendent gods who command creation.  One thing to consider is that when in human form (and sometimes in anthropomorphic form) they usually hold in their hands symbols of their earthly power.  The ankh; showing the knot of life, the menat; fertility and physical satisfaction.  The appearance of each neter shows through colour, gesture, size and placement what providence that neter holds over this dominion.

Interesting is that my dealings with the neters use their human guise, with the exception of Heru and Anpu, both whom I’ve seen in all three aspects:  animal, anthropomorphic and human.  Nebet-Het and Asar, Suti and Asar, I always see as human.

–Neters as Science -
Houston presents that for ancient Egyptians man was a model of the universe and the universe a model for God.  When he understood himself fully, he was likewise able to understand his environment and the Divine connected to/through him.  Everything was linked and nothing really opposed anything else in this system.  It all worked together.  Using this “netered psychology” they were connected to each other in civilization and the collective, durative unconscious.

My experience with the neters have helped me understand geometry, physical, astronomy, agriculture, fertility and probably many, many others aspects of the scientific world.

–Neters as the Physical Body - The reference in the book is the vital organs of the body being placed in canopic jars being the heads of the transmorphic Sons of Heru:  Jackal = stomach, because of the decomposition needed for that animal to be able to digest its food properly.  The heart = Ma’at because it is her feather which is weighed against the individuals heart to determine its lightness, or it’s ability to process and integrate “truth” into ones life and experience.

My experiences is with Ptah and the pneuma or the logos/word which can weave energy into creation.  Aset spinning her woes into her world, which was matted to protect the child she was gestating.  I’ve learned how to protect my own home and family with such weaving.

This has been my life…

Crowley’s poem ‘Babalon’ published for the first time.

Treadwells and Fulgur are delighted to announce the first issue of our new esoteric journal ABRAXAS is now in press. In keeping with our intent, writers and artists have kindly submitted material from across the globe: Australia, the United States, Mexico, Italy and the United Kingdom are keenly represented.

Nearly all the material is published for the first time. Here may be found inspiring essays from luminaries within the esoteric community, many of them written especially for the journal. Artists too are well represented, both established masters and emerging talents: a feast for the eyes and soul. Our poets include Allyson Shaw, Zachary Cox and, from beyond the veil, Aleister Crowley, whose evocative verse ‘Babalon’ finally finds itself in print more than sixty years after it was written.

Produced in a large quarto format, with 128 pages printed on high quality paper and richly illustrated in colour and monochrome, we hope Abraxas will offer you a strange mirror through which may be glimpsed the zeitgeist of the global occult community today.

Rune #20: MANNAZ

// August 11th, 2009 // No Comments » // magick

MANNAZ

MANNAZ

Mannaz is the fourth rune of the third aett. Its name is the reconstructed Common germanic for “man” in the sense of “human being.” Although it follows closely after Berkano, a very female rune, Ingwaz is Berkano’s polar opposite in terms of matters of gender. Mannaz became Man in Anglo-Saxon, and thus on into Modern English. It became Mannar or Madhr in Old Norse.

All three Rune Poems refer to the relationship between Humanity and dust or Earth. The Anglo-Saxon Rune Poem, reminds us that the “lord” decrees that human flesh must go to Earth (shades of the Adam and Eve story?). The Old Norse Rune Rhyme and the Old Icelandic Rune Poem are more upbeat, referring to humanity as “the increase of dust.” Our own myths see us as having evolved from inert matter, specifically from tree trunks, which of course grow from the Earth.

Stanza 47 of the Havamal (Hollander translation) reminds us that “man is cheered by man.” This is echoed in both the Old English Rune Poem “Man is in his mirth, dear to his kinsman” (Edred Thorsson translation) and The Old Icelandic Rune Poem “Man is the joy of man” (same translation). Humans are social creatures. Nevertheless, Mannaz is more a rune of self-examination than of social life. Gebo, Wunjo, and to an extent Sowilo embody our more pleasant human relationships. Tiwaz expresses the more combative side of them.

Some folks make the mistake of worrying too much about what others think of them, thinking that others may be right in thinking ill of them, and as a result never get to know themselves, or develop a strong sense of self. I used to be like that. I got better, and am happier and better off for it. Backbone development, as expressed in the rune Uruz, is a great aid in the spiritual journey of self-discovery. We should be grounded in what is at the core of our being, rather than let things like gender, occupation, hobbies, nationality, or even religion define us in an absolute sense. All of these things are important, but there are levels of the Human Being that go beyond this. Most of us were not born to Heathenism, but have chosen this path. Still, we remain ourselves through all the changes life brings us; some chosen, some not. Most of us Heathens believe in some form(s) of Rebirth. Truly, there is more to the Self than the current edition! Those interested in studying the aspects that make up the human being in Heathenism should consult Our Troth (linked from my webpage), Teutonic Religion by Kveldulf Gundarsson (sadly, out of print), or A Book of Troth by Edred Thorsson.

Once a person has a clear and balanced sense of Self, he or she can begin to develop, grow and evolve, an important Heathen goal in my opinion. Over the (Pagan) Delphic Oracle in ancient Greece were written the words “Know Thyself.” I think this is a worthy goal for Heathens today as well. A well-integrated, self-aware person will do far better as a part of a community. Odin’s sacrifice of “myself to myself” can be seen as a function of Mannaz. He certainly grew in wisdom, knowledge and self-confidence, expressed in his actions. “From a word to a word I was led to a word; from a deed to another deed.” One word of caution here; while a healthy sense of Self is good, it is best seasoned with a dose of “humility” in its etymological, non-Christian sense; that is, a closeness to Earth, a down-to-Earthness as it were. A bit of judicious bragging at sumbel is great; being a braggart or stuffed shirt is not. Those who build up themselves at others’ expense are not liked or respected; not now, not a thousand years ago!

Meanings of this rune include Mankind/Humanity, self, identity, strengths, weaknesses, frailties and shortcomings, or an individual person. In his book Germania, Tacitus, an ancient Roman writer, states that the Germans traced their origin to one “Mannus” i.e. Mannaz. Later myths see humanity as created by Odin and his two brothers, and later improved by the addition of divine DNA, as it were, from Heimdallr/Rig. Myths seek to explain the origin of humanity. They should not be read literally, as many Evangelical Christians today misread theirs. Mannaz is more direct. The questions it asks each of us include: “What is Man? What is Woman? What and who am I?”

There are many aspects of the Self. Some are in polarities. Every person has both male and female aspects of the personality. Jung called these the animus and anima. Strengths and weaknesses are another example. We play many roles. Each demands different aspects of our personal makeup in different proportions. An individual’s work behavior might not make for a peaceful home if displayed there. The trick is not to get lost in these roles, “and to thine own self be true.” This inner, changeless Self is a unique and beautiful thing. This is our inner, personal, Yggdrasil. Mannaz is the paradox of the inner self with the personality woven about the unique core. Mannaz strikes a balance and makes corrections and adjustments, enabling us to live our lives in balance. By coming to terms with the Inner Self, we can come to understand how it is expressed externally. Mannaz is the rune by which you can balance your personal attributes and also determine your own place in your family, society, world and Universe.

This rune has initiatory overtones. Remember Odin’s quests for knowledge. It is both question and answer. We learn to know ourselves both by introspection and observation of how we interact with the people, places and things around us. The spiritual journey, the “road to Bifrost,” begins here. Elhaz and Eihwaz, seen as two poles, can shed further light on this mystery. In the Younger Futhark, Elhaz dropped out and Mannaz changed form. The stave for Mannaz/Madhr in the Younger Futhark looks like the Elhaz rune! Remember that there is a spark of the Divine in the Human. Think of the gifts given Humanity by Odin and his brothers, and that we can be seen as Rig’s children. Elhaz as a rune of hallowing brings Asgard down to Midgard.

This rune has a relationship to its immediate predecessor, Ehwaz. While Ehwaz journeys in search of truth, Mannaz looks within. Each of us will find different answers to the question “Who am I?” These answers will evolve and grow over time. Religion should be an aid to answering this question, not something that distracts us from it. Our religion values individuality, after all!

As your life unfolds, are you coming to know, face and deal with productively your strengths and weaknesses? Are you seeking to understand your Inner Self? Only you can answer this question! May Mannaz bring you growing insights!

ZAA – An Adventure with Yourself

Maya or illusion is an element which enters into all finite things, for everything that exists has only a relative, not an absolute, reality, since the appearance which the hidden noumenon assumes for any observer depends upon his power of cognition.

- H.P. Blavatsky, The Secret Doctrine

An adventure in loneliness; a meeting of yourself with the alienation of your own soul.  The Aethyr of Solitude.

Re-dedicate to Sekhmet for the new Egyptian year

// August 7th, 2009 // 2 Comments » // magick

I re-dedicate myself to Sekhmet for the new Egyptian year.  This is my prayer:

O SEKHMET, DESTROYER OF THE INESSENTIAL,
Cleanse from me all which hinders the broadening of my experience,
my tolerance, and my generosity of heart.

REVEAL THE SEED OF BRIGHTNESS,
Uncover my Heart’s Desire,
And bring that silence of peace
In which its voice I may hear.

O SUN, LIGHT THIS DARKENED HOUSE
Devour with your rays the pride of my ignorance
Clear away all obstacles in my path,
And with Beauty inspire me on my Way.

O, TERRIBLE! O, IRRESISTIBLE!

PRAISE UNTO SEKHMET THE MIGHTY!
And woe unto him who would make War upon Her,
For even the greatest is subdued by Her Love
And the World overwhelmed with the children of Her Victories!
